What Are Reclaimed Bricks?

Reclaimed bricks are full‑size clay bricks carefully removed from existing buildings and infrastructure so they can be cleaned, sorted, and reused. Many of the bricks in our yard were made in historic Hudson Valley brickyards and used in New York City projects a century ago or more. They carry original frog marks, maker stamps, and subtle variations in color that tell the story of where they came from.

Because these bricks have already performed outdoors for decades, they are naturally suited to local weather and freeze–thaw cycles. Reusing them reduces demolition waste and the energy needed to make new brick, while letting you build with materials that feel grounded and timeless.

Why Choose Reclaimed New York Bricks?

Reclaimed New York bricks offer a richness and depth that manufactured “antique look” products can’t match. Each brick has its own chips, softened edges, and surface variation, so finished walls and patios feel lived‑in from day one instead of uniform and flat. Designers and homeowners use them to bring warmth to facades, fireplaces, and garden spaces without waiting years for patina to develop.

They’re also a sustainable choice. Every pallet of reclaimed bricks you use avoids sending material to landfill and avoids firing new clay. For many projects, that means lower embodied carbon and a story you can share with clients about reuse and responsible sourcing.

Exterior Walls, Facades, and Garden Walls

Full reclaimed bricks are a natural choice for exterior walls, garden walls, and additions where you want the building to feel established from day one. They blend well with older masonry and give new construction the depth and irregularity of historic brickwork.

Many projects also use reclaimed brick for low garden walls, planters, and seat walls, tying the architecture into surrounding hardscape and landscape features.

Patios, Paths, and Landscape Edging

Reclaimed bricks work beautifully on the ground as patios, walkways, and edging. Their slightly softened edges and color variation create inviting outdoor surfaces that pair well with cobblestones, granite steps, and Belgian blocks.

Use full bricks on a proper base for patios and paths, and stand bricks on edge as edging along garden beds, driveways, and lawn transitions.

Interior Feature Walls, Fireplaces, and Wine Rooms

Reclaimed thin brick veneer is ideal for bringing brick indoors without the depth of full masonry. Install it as an accent wall in living rooms or bedrooms, as a feature behind a bar, or as a backdrop in restaurants and retail spaces.

Thin brick veneers also create dramatic fireplaces and wine cellars that feel like they’ve always been there. You get the irregularity and patina of real brick, with simpler installation over drywall, cement board, or masonry.

Using reclaimed brick in restaurants and hotels serves more than just a decorative purpose; it becomes part of the brand story.

Installation

Installation depends on whether you’re using full bricks or thin veneers. Full bricks require a suitable base and mortar bed, just like new masonry, and should follow best practices for structural and exterior work. Veneers, by contrast, are installed more like tile over prepared substrates with thin‑set or adhesive, then grouted or pointed.

Because reclaimed bricks vary slightly in size and texture, installers often embrace a bit of irregularity in joint widths and alignment. That variation is part of what makes reclaimed projects feel authentic instead of manufactured.

Maintenance & Care

Reclaimed brick surfaces are generally low maintenance once installed correctly. For exterior work, periodic cleaning and sensible detailing, like drip edges and proper caps, help protect the masonry, just as they would on new brick. For interior veneers, occasional dusting or vacuuming is usually enough, and sealed surfaces are easier to wipe down in kitchens and commercial spaces.

Because reclaimed bricks already show some wear, they tend to age gracefully: a few extra scuffs and marks simply add to the patina. Where needed, sealers and breathable coatings can be used, following best practices for historic masonry.

Cost & Planning

Costs for reclaimed bricks vary with brick type, format, and whether you are buying full bricks or thin veneers. Full bricks are typically sold by the piece or by coverage (per square foot), while veneers are sold by coverage with known bricks‑per‑square‑foot and pallet yields.

Labor can be slightly higher than with perfectly uniform new units because of natural variability, but the finished look is often the main goal. Sharing your drawings or measurements, photos, and intended use helps us estimate quantities, suggest a mix of brick types, and recommend whether full bricks, thin veneers, or a combination will work best.

How are reclaimed bricks different from new bricks?

Reclaimed bricks are salvaged from existing buildings and have already proven themselves in real‑world conditions. They show natural wear, color variation, and makers’ marks that new bricks try to imitate, and they keep usable material out of landfills.

Can reclaimed bricks be used structurally?

The majority of reclaimed bricks are structurally capable, but they are not manufactured or tested to modern ASTM standards. Structural use should always be evaluated by a qualified professional based on your project and local codes.

Where are your reclaimed bricks from?

Most of our reclaimed bricks are salvaged from historic New York City and Hudson Valley buildings and infrastructure. They are cleaned, sorted, and palletized at our yard before shipping to projects across the country.

What’s the difference between full bricks and thin brick veneer?

Full bricks are traditional, full‑depth masonry units used in walls, patios, and landscape work. Thin brick veneer is a 1/2”–3/4” slice cut from the face of full bricks, designed for non‑structural wall and floor applications where space and weight are limited.

How much variation should I expect in reclaimed bricks?

Variation in size, color, and texture is part of the reclaimed brick experience. Each batch is sorted by general tone and type, but you should expect irregularities that create a more natural, timeworn look once installed. Get a sample box.
