Frequently Asked Questions
About us
Who is Chief Bricks?
Chief Bricks is the nation’s largest supplier of reclaimed bricks and cobblestones from New York City. Since 1925, we have been continuously seeking out the entire city to keep New York City's history alive and provide a healthy environment for us people for centuries to come.
Is reclaiming a safe practice?
It has to be. Everyone has the right to work in a safe environment. Our vision is to have colleagues, contractors and visitors return home safely at the end of each day. We are committed to the safety and welfare of everyone through prevention, education and awareness of the challenges of reclaiming bricks and stones.
Are you a recycling center?
No. We are a reuse center and that's better.
When you dump bricks and stones in a recycling center, they get crushed by energy intensive heavy machinery and converted into structural filler that will end in the ground. And you pay for it. When you drop bricks and stones at Chief Bricks, we repurpose them for a new life. And we pay you.
Reusing is about creating something of high quality and durability saving all the energy, costs and materials of recycling. Call us at (718) 379-1232 to drop for free at our yard on 15 Fisher Ave, Nanuet, NY 10954 or schedule a free pick up.
Do you install your bricks and stones?
No. We are strictly suppliers of the highest quality New York City reclaimed bricks and stones and new belgian blocks in the country.
I have used bricks and stones to sell, will you buy them?
We are always on the lookout for bricks and stones. Please send us pictures, quantity and location via the contact form and we'll be in touch to discuss.
Can I talk to someone?
Of course. Call us Monday to Friday on (718) 379-1232 between 7am-3:00pm EST.
Reclaimed bricks
What's a reclaimed brick?
A reclaimed brick is a previously used brick that has been salvaged from an older structure during demolition or renovation, like a building or factory. Reclaimed bricks are typically more expensive than new bricks due to the labor involved in salvaging, cleaning, and transporting them. However, their unique character and environmental benefits make them a popular choice for those looking to add charm and history to a building project.
Are "reclaimed, used, antique, old" bricks the same thing?
Yes. Reclaimed bricks are also referred to as reused, recycled, rescued, antique and old.
Where do you source your reclaimed bricks?
Here are the main places where we source our reclaimed bricks:
- Historic buildings and homes: Many reclaimed bricks come from older buildings, especially those constructed before the 20th century.
- Industrial sites and factories: Factories, warehouses, and other industrial sites are often sources of reclaimed bricks, especially in older industrial areas. Bricks from these sites are usually well-made to withstand heavy use and have a distinctive, weathered look.
- Schools and municipal buildings: Older schools, churches, hospitals and government buildings often contain high-quality bricks with unique markings.
- Kilns and chimneys: Bricks from kilns, chimneys, and furnaces are sometimes reclaimed.
- Demolished farmhouses: Bricks from old farmhouses and barns, especially along the Hudson River, have a rustic appearance, which is highly sought after for their color and historical character.
How different are reclaimed bricks from new bricks?
Reclaimed bricks are often chosen for their character, sustainability, and historical appeal, while new bricks offer consistency, a broader range of styles, and lower cost. Have a look at our comparative article "Reclaimed vs New bricks" for more details.
Do you sell thin/veneer NYC reclaimed bricks?
Yes. We can get any of our New York reclaimed bricks cut in veneer. Give us the details here.
Will the bricks last?
Our reclaimed bricks and stones were made over a 100 years ago and most of them show very little to no wear and tear. The reason being is that bricks made during this time period were dried, fired and packed by hand. As a result of how they were created and the materials that were used, they are expected to last for many centuries.
Reclaimed cobblestones
Cobblestone vs. belgian block, what's the difference?
Cobblestones are naturally rounded stones, typically sourced from riverbeds or glacial deposits. They were not intentionally shaped but used in their natural form.
Belgian blocks are quarried, cut, and shaped rectangular or square blocks of stone, often resembling large bricks.
See a full comparison here.
Why buy a reclaimed stone instead of a new Belgian Block?
The high quality and unique character of reclaimed cobblestones make them a popular choice for those looking to add history and charm to new projects. Each stone often has a unique look due to natural aging and wear, making them visually distinct from newly quarried stones and an excellent long-term investment.
Where do you source your reclaimed cobblestones?
Reclaimed cobblestones are salvaged from old roads, streets, and building sites, primarily in historic areas of New York. Here are some common sources:
- Old NYC streets and sidewalks: As New York City is modernizing and repurposing older districts, cobblestones from original streets are collected and preserved by us.
- Industrial sites and warehouses: Cobblestones were widely used in industrial areas, shipping ports, and warehouse districts to create strong, durable surfaces that could handle heavy loads. When these sites are redeveloped, the cobblestones are often salvaged.
- Demolition of Historic Buildings and Estates: Occasionally, reclaimed cobblestones come from demolished buildings or estates with cobbled driveways, courtyards, or pathways.
Will the stones last?
Yes, reclaimed cobblestones are known for their durability and can last for many decades, even centuries, when properly installed. These stones were originally selected and shaped for resilience, as they were used in streets, industrial sites, and other high-traffic areas. Here are a few reasons why reclaimed cobblestones can stand the test of time:
- Granite: The reclaimed cobblestones you'll find around New York are made from granite that is naturally resistant to wear, weathering, and pressure. The high durability of granite is one of the reasons they have been preserved and can be reused.
- Aged Patina and Hardening: Over time, cobblestones become harder and gain a natural patina, which adds to their visual appeal and strength. The aging process makes them more resistant to environmental factors like freeze-thaw cycles.
- Resistance to Erosion: Reclaimed cobblestones have proven their resilience against erosion, having withstood decades or even centuries of weather and traffic. This resilience makes them a great choice for new installations where long-term stability is desired.
- Historical Installation Techniques: Often, reclaimed cobblestones were installed with sand, gravel, or compacted dirt, which allowed them to "float" slightly and adapt to shifts in the ground. This flexibility in installation reduces the likelihood of cracking or chipping over time, especially when installed the same way today.
- Timeless Aesthetic: Their natural durability is complemented by their timeless appearance. Reclaimed cobblestones develop unique textures and colors over time, which not only adds character but makes them less likely to show wear and tear visibly.
When correctly laid with proper foundation and drainage, reclaimed cobblestones can remain functional and beautiful for generations, making them an excellent long-term investment.
New Belgian Blocks
Where do your new Belgian Blocks come from?
Not Belgium, but India. We import our own stones straight from a dedicated quarry in India. All sides natural cut and consistent size. All sizes are available in grey, some are available in black, pink and Phoenician buff.
Why does having uniform Belgian Blocks matter?
Using Belgian Blocks of the same size and shape for a driveway offers several advantages:
- Consistent Aesthetic Appeal: Uniform cobblestones create a visually harmonious look, giving the driveway a clean, orderly appearance. This consistency can enhance the curb appeal and add a polished feel to the property.
- Ease of Installation: Regularly sized cobblestones are easier to arrange in straight or patterned lines, saving time and labor costs compared to irregularly sized stones.
- Improved Stability: Uniform cobblestones distribute weight evenly across the surface, helping to prevent shifting, sinking, or loosening over time. This makes the driveway more durable and able to withstand the weight of vehicles without deformation.
- Reduced Weed Growth: With cobblestones of uniform size, the gaps between stones can be minimized and filled with sand or grout, reducing spaces where weeds might grow.
- Enhanced Traction and Safety: The consistent surface created by regularly sized cobblestones can provide better traction for both vehicles and pedestrians, reducing slip hazards and promoting safety.
Using cobblestones of the same size and shape can result in a stable, attractive, and low-maintenance driveway with long-term durability.
