Why NHL 3.5 instead of a standard Type N cement mortar?

NHL 3.5 lime mortar provides similar working strength to a Type N but remains more permeable and flexible, making it safer for reclaimed and historic bricks than rigid Portland‑rich mixes.

Can this mortar be used both for laying and repointing reclaimed bricks?

Yes. Within its strength class, it works for laying, relaying and repointing reclaimed full bricks and veneers; gradation (G/F/BJ) is chosen based on joint size and finish.

Is it suitable for exterior applications in freeze–thaw climates?

When correctly detailed and cured, NHL 3.5 mortar is widely used on exterior historic masonry in cold climates because it manages moisture and accommodates movement better than many cement mortars.

Will the stock colors match all Chief brick lines exactly?

Colors are calibrated to pair with Chief’s reclaimed bricks, but variations in old brick and screen differences mean exact matches cannot be guaranteed, so on‑site samples are strongly recommended.

Do I need special mixing equipment or additives?

No additives are required; the mortar is designed to be mixed with clean water using a standard paddle mixer or drill and paddle, and additional Portland cement or admixtures should not be added.
