Cutting needed. Reclaimed slabs come in mixed widths with rough, chiseled edges. To lay them tight, every slab is sawn straight and trimmed to fit its neighbors and the edges, so plan on about 20% of the stone ending up as offcuts.

Tight togetherCovers your whole area. Slab widths vary and edges are rough, so every slab is sawn to fit: add about 20% for offcuts.
With gapsSquare feet of stone for your path or patio after the grass or gravel gaps. Little cutting is needed: 5% covers breakage and selection.
Paths, rings & surroundsSlabs are laid across a path one after another, around a fire pit or a lawn one slab deep. The slab count follows the gap you choose.
PalletsSold by the pallet of about 100 sq ft; the minimum order is one pallet. Slab widths vary, so the slab count is an estimate.

    FAQs

How much bluestone do I need for a patio?

Multiply the length by the width of your patio in feet to get the square feet, then add waste: about 20% when the slabs are laid tight together, because reclaimed slabs vary in width and need cutting to fit, or about 5% when you leave gaps between them. Each pallet holds about 100 sq ft, and the minimum order is one pallet.

How many square feet are in a pallet of reclaimed bluestone?

Each pallet of Chief Bricks reclaimed bluestone sidewalk slabs holds about 100 sq ft of usable stone, not counting joints.

How much space should I leave between bluestone stepping stones?

Most stepping-stone paths and patios use a gap of 6 inches to 1 foot, filled with grass, gravel or ground cover. Wider gaps of 1 1/2 to 3 feet suit a relaxed garden path. The calculator lets you choose any gap from 6 inches to 3 feet, in 6-inch steps.

Can I use reclaimed bluestone slabs for a driveway?

Reclaimed bluestone sidewalk slabs are generally too thin for driveways. For driveways we recommend our thicker reclaimed bluestone curbstones.

Can I use bluestone slabs around a fire pit?

Yes, as a patio or a ring of slabs around the pit. Keep the stone out of direct contact with the flames: line the pit itself with firebrick or a steel ring, because natural stone can crack under direct heat. In the calculator, choose With gaps, then Fire pit, to plan a ring of slabs around a pit of any size.
